We left A Coruña early on the Monday morning, headed out, turned left and promptly wished we hadn’t. It was still really unpleasant after a week of strong winds. The Atlantic is a big ass bit of ocean that seems to gain energy from making people on boats feel as rough as badger’s arses. After 6 hours it calmed down enough to let us enjoy the last 3 hours watching the coastline pass by. At least we weren’t feeling sick, as having learned our lesson we were now pill popping sea sickness tablets whatever weather was predicted!
We arrived in Camariñas mid afternoon on a glorious day. You can’t actually see the town of Camariñas until you round the bend a little bit, but before you see it you can smell it. It smelt like Christmas in a Yankee candle shop. All along the right hand side of us were hillsides covered in pine trees. We carried on past the marina and easily saw the anchorage we were looking for. There were 2 other boats there so we dropped anchor, had a matrimonial discussion about being so close to one of the 2 boats that were already there, moved and then settled down with beer and gin. And perhaps some tonic, but knowing us you can never be too sure.
The anchorage was amazing, with perfectly calm water, amazing views and complete silence. Unfortunately Franco seemed to take offence to the quiet and started to woof. It echoed so beautifully around the previously serene anchorage he decided everyone else must have been enjoying this and wouldn’t shut up, resulting in him being thrown overboard which promptly silenced him where we couldn’t. Lee rowed the dinghy ashore while Franco followed him swimming, and there they had a nice play on the small beach before coming back for their dinners.
The next morning, after a great sleep we couldn’t make up our minds whether to stay another night or move on. As Franco needed a walk we went ashore and decided to walk to the town. We went up a little hill from the beach, followed it around to the left and then stood still. Have you ever been to a place that just gives you the willies for no reason at all? Even Lee said something felt very wrong so we turned around the way we had come and headed back to the boat just a little quicker than on the way there, both a little confused as to what had just happened. All it needed was some duelling banjos and the scene would have been complete.
We got back onboard, weighed anchor immediately and headed off on our travels further South, leaving beautiful but creepy Camariñas behind us.
Glad he got a swim in….
